Scripture to Ponder – October 21, 2024

Theme: Reformation

Twenty-third after Pentecost

Scripture Reading: Job 42:1-6, 10-17 and Hebrews 7:25

Reformation Sunday is a Christian observance celebrated primarily by Protestant denominations, commemorating the beginning of the Protestant Reformation. This significant movement originated in the early 16th century, primarily associated with Martin Luther, who famously posted his Ninety-Five Theses on the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg, Germany, in 1517. Luther’s actions challenged the practices of the Roman Catholic Church, particularly the sale of indulgences, and emphasized salvation through faith alone, the authority of Scripture, and the priesthood of all believers.

Reformation Sunday is typically observed on the last Sunday in October, near the anniversary of Luther’s pivotal act. It serves as a reminder of the Reformation’s core values—faith, grace, and the importance of scripture—and encourages reflection on the ongoing need for renewal and reform within the church. It often includes special services, hymns, and sermons that highlight the themes of freedom in Christ and the call to discipleship.

Have you ever changed your mind about something? Five hundred years ago, some people in the church changed their minds. They thought the church was not acting the way Jesus would want it to. So, they reorganized everything.

Have you ever changed the things you do in your life because you didn’t like how they were doing? Jesus wants us to think about how we can be better people and how we can be a better church. What ideas do you have?

Scripture to Ponder

In Job 42:1-6, we witness a profound moment of transformation as Job acknowledges God’s sovereignty: “I know that you can do all things.” After enduring immense suffering, Job moves from questioning God to recognizing His supreme authority, repenting in humility. This internal reformation reflects the essence of true repentance and dependence on God’s grace.

Similarly, Hebrews 7:25 highlights Jesus as our eternal High Priest, assuring us that He “is able to save completely those who come to God through him.” This assurance invites a personal relationship with Christ, shifting our reliance away from rituals to direct communion with God.

Together, these passages challenge us to seek both personal and communal reformation. They remind us to embrace a transformative faith that reflects God’s grace and truth in our lives and our church. As we reflect on these scriptures, let us open our hearts to God’s renewing work, fostering deeper discipleship and a more authentic expression of our faith.

Questions to Reflect

In what areas of our church life might we need reformation? For instance, we could focus on becoming a truly intercultural church that fosters an environment where all cultures can thrive. This includes cultivating compassion and understanding toward our differences, as well as envisioning a future church that embraces diversity and inclusion.

Prayer

Gracious God, as we reflect on the Reformation, open our hearts to the changes you desire in our lives and in our community. Help us recognize your goodness and grace in every moment. Strengthen our faith in Jesus as our High Priest and inspire us to actively participate in the transformation of our church, embodying love and justice in all we do. Amen.

It will be a Saturday morning workshop concluding with a soup lunch (provided) and presentation of everyone’s ‘work of art’.  Maximum participants is 25; cost expected to be $75/person. Trinity is planning to host 2 one hour training sessions on the use of our AED (Automated External Defibrillator) along with a basic CPR demonstration. This would include GSA Members. We are looking to pay someone to do this so if anyone feels qualified or knows of someone who might be interested in doing this please contact Terry DeLong. His contact info is in the Church Directory or may be obtained by contacting Trinity’s Office. Note: this is not for CPR Certification, just a basic demo and our AED is a newer model that “speaks” to the user with specific instructions and has a “test” mode. The hope is to accommodate about 20 people per session and have one session on a Sunday after Trinity’s regular Service and another group of 20 after supper on a Monday -Thursday evening. Dates to be determined. Some PAL members might join in. RKNS already have Certification so wouldn’t be joining us. We are trying to save some money as the AED Company will charge us $252  for each session and we don’t want to charge Members to take this potential life-saving Training.

It’s the United Church’s 100th Anniversary next year (2025).  2025 United Church calendars will be available again this year. Gerta de Jong is taking orders (as a courtesy for the Fundraising Committee) and will submit the order by no later than Monday, Nov 4, 2024.  The cost is $10 per calendar.  Please contact Gerta by email at gdejong@mymts.net  or call and leave a message at 204-232-6869.  This is not a Fundraising event.

From Damber:

October 14- Scripture to Ponder & Prayer

         Twenty-second after Pentecost

Scriptures: Job 38:1–7, (34–41); Hebrews 5:1–10; Mark 10:35–45

Scripture to Ponder: Hebrews 5:1–10

In Hebrews 5:1-10, we see the profound truth that Jesus, though divine, learned obedience through suffering. This passage highlights how Christ’s humanity was marked by trials that shaped His mission as our High Priest.

As I reflect on this, I’m struck by the ways in which my own challenges and sufferings have led me to deeper faith and understanding. Each trial seems to carve out space in my heart for God’s presence, much like how Jesus’ experiences prepared Him for His redemptive work.

Personal Reflection: In moments of difficulty, I often wrestle with the question: Why must I endure this? Yet, as I meditate on this scripture, I realize that suffering is not merely a burden but a teacher. It shapes my character, aligns my heart with God’s will, and deepens my reliance on Him. Just as Jesus learned obedience, I, too, am invited into a process of growth that requires humility and trust.

Contextualizing the Theme: In today’s world, where instant gratification is often pursued, learning through suffering can feel countercultural. Yet, the reality is that we all face struggles—be it personal loss, relational strain, or the weight of societal issues. These experiences can draw us closer to God if we allow them to mold us rather than break us. They remind us that obedience is not simply about following rules, but about aligning our hearts with God’s desires, even when the path is difficult.

Questions to Ponder

  • In what specific areas of your life have you experienced growth through suffering? How did those experiences shape your understanding of obedience?
  • How can you support others who are suffering, helping them see the potential for growth and learning in their struggles?

Prayer:

Lord, thank You for the example of Christ, who embraced suffering to learn obedience and fulfill Your will. Help me to see my own trials as opportunities for growth and transformation. Grant me the strength to endure and the wisdom to learn from my experiences. May I always seek to align my heart with Yours, trusting that in my suffering, You are drawing me closer to You. Amen.
