Scripture to Ponder & Prayer

Fourth Week in September 2025

“A week when we remember those children who never returned home”

Scriptures for this week:

 Jeremiah 32:1–3, 6–15; Psalm 91:1–6, 14–16;

1 Timothy 6:6–19; Luke 16:19–31

 To Ponder:

 Jeremiah 32:1–3, 6–15; Luke 16:19–31

 A Brief Reflection

When Jeremiah was imprisoned for speaking God’s truth (Jeremiah 32:1–3), he was asked by God to do something surprising—buy a field, an act of hope in the midst of despair. The land transaction became a sign that God’s promise of restoration was greater than the destruction around them. Jeremiah’s obedience showed that even in the darkest times, God’s future is one of renewal and life.

In Luke 16:19–31, Jesus tells of a rich man who ignored Lazarus, a poor man at his gate. The parable is a stark reminder that ignoring the suffering of others has eternal consequences. It challenges us to see the dignity of those who are overlooked and to live lives of compassion and justice.

Phyllis Webstad’s story mirrors both the loss and the promise found in these scriptures. At six years old, her orange shirt—given with love by her grandmother—was taken away at residential school. That shirt became a symbol of her worth being denied, of her identity being stripped, and of the deep wounds inflicted upon Indigenous children, families, and communities.

Yet today, the orange shirt has become a sign of hope and truth-telling. Just as Jeremiah’s field purchase spoke of a future of restoration, the wearing of orange reminds us that “Every Child Matters.” It is a collective act of remembering, honoring, and committing ourselves to reconciliation.

As we mark Orange Shirt Day, may we see the face of Lazarus in Phyllis and in all survivors of residential schools. May we acknowledge the wounds of the past, and may our actions today sow seeds of justice, healing, and restored dignity.

A Question to Hold:

 ·         Where is God calling me to listen deeply, act compassionately, and invest in the hope of reconciliation, even when it feels costly or uncomfortable?

Let us pray …

God of truth and reconciliation,

we remember the children who never came home,

and we honor the survivors who still carry deep wounds.

Open our eyes to the cries we might ignore,

open our hearts to the healing work you call us to,

and open our hands to sow justice and hope.

May the seeds we plant today grow into a future

where every child matters, and every life is cherished. Amen.

Come with an Orange Shirt this Sunday

We invite everyone to wear an orange shirt to remember and honour the children of Residential Schools and to affirm that every child matters. Orange Shirt Day began with the story of Phyllis Webstad, a Northern Secwpemc woman, who had her new orange shirt taken away on her first day at St. Joseph Mission Residential School. She, like many others, cried herself to sleep, far from home, with no one to listen or show compassion.

Call or email Marilyn or Irma if you can help.

In our Prayers

Prayer For the People of Nepal: We lift up in prayer the people of Nepal, especially as the nation grieves the tragic loss of 72 young lives—ranging in age from 13 to 28—during what was meant to be a peaceful demonstration. These young voices were calling for an end to corruption and seeking the restoration of freedom, including the lifting of the social media ban.

We pray for comfort and healing for the grieving families, peace for the nation, and wisdom for its leaders. May justice, freedom, and unity prevail, and may the people of Nepal know hope in the midst of sorrow.

Lord, in Your mercy—hear our prayer.

We pray for those facing health challenges:

We pray for Victor Bryll who is in hospital dealing with health issues.

We pray for  Bernice Gregory who is dealing with health issues.

We pray for Connie Fillion who is recovering at home as she deals with health issues.
We continue to pray for  Damber’s family – Sumi as she continues her recovery following cancer treatment, for Sumi’s three nieces Ameera, Anupaa, and Anuka in the camp in Nepal and for Damber’s mother, Dhan Khadka as she faces health issues. Damber and Sumi are grateful for the prayers and support of the congregation.

From Maryann: Trinity Walkers
WHY DO I WALK?
This question  for me has many answers.
Walking improves my mental health just as much as my physical health. It can be done anywhere without any special equipment, indoors or out.
Every step counts and is considered low intensity yet builds stronger bones and helps keep joints flexible When walking,  I enjoy outdoor walks more, the changes in the air
from inside to out and the exposure to nature can grab my attention. Walking also can improve memory, concentration and reduce stress.
At times indoor walks are the way to go if one wants to avoid allergens and the miserable weather outside.
No matter, outdoors or in, when one walks with another person it is easier to develop and maintain a walking routine and build a friendship along the way.
If you want to learn more or find a walking partner contact me.

Electronics Recycling – Bring your small electronics for recycling – recycle items that fit into the blue box in the narthex.

Opportunities to serve: There are many volunteer opportunities in the ministry at Trinity. If you are able to offer the gift of time, please let us know. There are opportunities, to serve on committees, to help with one time special events, help serve at funeral lunches and fellowship coffee, to help with technology, read scripture, offer prayers, sing in the choir, to work at bombers games, help with Sunday School and Youth, etc. Please prayerfully consider these opportunities and be in touch with the office (204 269 1632) tuc@mymts.net.  We are grateful for every gift given and appreciate all you do for Trinity. See sign up sheets in the narthex for scripture reading, prayers of the people, ushers and greeters.

Scripture to Ponder & Prayer

Third Week in September

Creation Times Week 2

Scriptures of the week:

Jeremiah 8:18—9:1; Psalm 79:1–9; 1 Timothy 2:1–7; Luke 16:1–13

To Ponder: Jeremiah 8:18—9:1 & Psalm 79:1–9

A Brief Reflection:

The prophet Jeremiah is overwhelmed with grief for his people and the land they inhabit. His cry, “Is there no balm in Gilead?” captures the longing for healing that seems beyond reach. He bears the sorrow of a wounded community—broken in spirit, in society, and in body.

Psalm 79 echoes this anguish, giving voice to a whole community lamenting devastation and disgrace. Yet their lament is not without faith: in the very act of crying out, they turn to God for mercy, for deliverance, and for forgiveness. These scriptures remind us that honest lament is itself an act of faith, and that God’s healing often begins with our willingness to bring our pain before the Holy One.

Question to Ponder:

Where do you see the wounds of your community or the world today, and how might you join in prayer and action for healing?

Let us pray …

God of mercy and compassion,

you hear the cries of your people and the groans of creation.

When despair weighs heavy, lift our eyes to your promise.

When sorrow overwhelms, remind us that your mercy is greater still.

Heal our hearts, restore our communities,

and guide us to live as people of hope and faith.

Through Christ, the One who mediates your love for all. Amen.

Reminder:
Join us for Bible Study this Monday at 1:30 p.m. in the Narthex. Bring along your prayers, insights, reflections, and wisdom as we gather in fellowship and learn from one another.

Our thoughts and prayers are with those people and places that are impacted by acts of aggression and violence, and those involved in investigations and grief counselling associated with such incidents. Especially this week, we think of the community of Hollow Water First Nation.

Our thoughts and prayers are with those living in areas of ongoing war or conflict (Gaza; Israel and Palestine; Qatar, the Ukraine) and those attempting to negotiate a just peace.
