What endures when generations pass, memories fade, and the world continues to change?
On Remembrance Sunday, we pause to honour those who sacrificed, those who served, and those who dreamed of a more peaceful world. Their stories remind us that the freedoms and opportunities we enjoy today came at a cost.
In Joshua, the people are called to remember God’s faithfulness and renew their covenant. Remembering becomes more than an act of looking backward; it becomes a responsibility to choose how we will live today.
In Matthew, Jesus tells the story of ten bridesmaids waiting with their lamps. Some are prepared for the long wait, while others find their lamps running out of oil. The parable reminds us that faith requires more than good intentions. It calls for perseverance, wisdom, and readiness to respond when the moment comes.
Perhaps the question for us is not simply whether we remember those who came before us, but whether we are prepared to carry their hopes forward.
What does our faith look like beyond Sunday worship? Are we prepared to stand for peace when hatred grows, to defend human dignity when injustice persists, and to keep hope alive when the future seems uncertain?
The light of faith is not something we preserve only for ourselves. It is a gift we are called to nurture and pass on.
As we remember the sacrifices of the past, may we also ask ourselves: What kind of peace, faith, and hope are we preparing to leave for the generations yet to come?
Let us pray …
God of enduring love,
As we remember the sacrifices of the past, help us carry forward the hope of a more peaceful world.
When fear and uncertainty surround us, strengthen our faith. When hatred and division arise, guide us toward compassion and reconciliation.
Keep the light of hope burning within us, and give us courage to work for justice, nurture peace, and leave a legacy of love for generations to come.
May our remembering inspire faithful living, and may your peace endure through all we say and do.
Amen.
