Scripture to Ponder & Prayer

Week of Transfiguration Sunday

Scripture to Ponder: (Exodus 24:12–18; Matthew 17:1–9)
In our world today, nations continue to show off their nuclear power, entering dangerous competitions that put not only their rivals, but their own people, at risk. These displays of strength threaten life itself. In such a moment, the gospel reminds us that we are not meant to stay on the mountaintops of power, pride, or fear, but to come down into the places where real people are longing for peace.
In the book of Exodus, Moses goes up the mountain and enters the cloud, where God’s presence is revealed in mystery and glory. The people remain below, while Moses stands between them and the Holy One. It is a powerful and overwhelming encounter with God.
In the Gospel story, Jesus also goes up a mountain. There, he is transfigured—his appearance shining with radiant light, and a cloud surrounding him as a sign of God’s nearness. Moses and Elijah appear with him, reminding us that Jesus stands in continuity with the Law and the Prophets.
But the story does not end on the mountain. From the cloud comes a simple and clear message: “Listen to him.” Transfiguration is not meant to keep the disciples in awe or apart from the world. It is meant to change them—and to change us—so that we live differently when we return to everyday life.
In a time marked by division, violence, and deep fear, this story speaks to our shared longing for peace. It invites us to be transformed from the inside out: to let go of prejudice and bias, to choose compassion over control, and to live lives shaped by justice, love, and reconciliation. As the earth groans and humanity cries out, the light revealed in Christ guides us toward a more faithful and hopeful way forward.
Let us pray…
Holy Presence,
shine your transforming light upon our world and our leaders
Shape the hearts of all who hold power and responsibility,
and renew our own hearts as well.
Free us from fear, prejudice, and despair.
Teach us to listen deeply,
to choose compassion,
and to walk the path of peace together. Amen.
