Scripture to Ponder & Prayer
Week of September 1, 2025
Friends,
This season invites us to remember our deep connection with creation—the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the neighbors we share this earth with. Caring for one another means caring for the environment that sustains all life.
Over the next five Sundays, as we walk together through the Season of Creation, we will learn and unlearn, noticing what has been hidden from us, and opening ourselves to new wisdom. We will listen to the groaning of creation and also to its songs of joy, learning how to live as faithful keepers, not exploiters, of the earth.
Scriptures for this week: Genesis 1: 1-4, Genesis 2:1-3, and John 1: 1-5.
To Ponder: Genesis 1:24–31 and John 1:1–5
A Brief Reflection
In the beginning, God spoke life into being. The earth brought forth every living creature, and then humankind—made in God’s image, entrusted as keepers of all creation. Not to rule as owners, but to reflect God’s light, sustaining life with care.
John reminds us: ‘In Him was life, and that life was the light of all people. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.’
Yet today, the world groans under brokenness—forests stripped, waters polluted, communities divided. Too often, we act as though creation is ours to exploit. But the call of God is different: to mend, to sustain, to walk as light in the darkness.
To be human is to bear God’s image—a unique responsibility to nurture, reconcile, and keep what has been entrusted. The question for us is simple yet profound: are we living as keepers, as light-bearers, in a world longing for healing?”
Prayer
Creator God, you formed us in Your image and entrusted us with the work of keeping and mending.
Forgive us when we exploit instead of sustain, when we harm instead of heal.
Rekindle Your light within us, that we may live as true keepers of creation and bearers of hope.
Strengthen us to walk in love, to protect what You have made, and to reflect Your light in the darkest places.
In Christ, the Word and the Light, we pray.
Amen.
