Local family in crisis…The Outreach committee is bringing a sad and challenging situation to your attention. Because of our friendships with Syrian gardeners, we are aware of things that affect their community. On January 2 a local Syrian woman, Hanna, aged 35, passed away suddenly from a heart condition. She leaves behind her husband, and five children, Muhammad age 16, Aya 14, Maryam 12, Ahmed 3 and her newborn son, Adam, born December 2. Hanna’s husband has stopped his studies at Red River College to stay home and care for his son. The local Syrian community is offering support as they are able. Because their culture determines that other women cannot visit in a home where there is only a man present, their help is somewhat limited. The family is in the process of trying to bring a sister, a widow without children, from Turkey, to help. As we know, this may take some time but it is an excellent plan.
How can we help? Trinity is seen in the community as being supportive and caring to all. We are asking for your support for this family through monetary donations that will be used to purchase diapers and formula for the baby. We will accept any donations for the family for the next two Sundays, ending on February 5. Donations will be independent of your regular church giving. On behalf of Hanna’s family, we say thank you for caring.
As you have read in the weekly bulletin, Gerta de Jong is stepping down from her role as bookkeeper for Trinity United Church after many years of dedicated service. Bookkeeping is a critical role in the ongoing operation of the church, and we need to ensure there is someone available to fill Gerta’s shoes. The role does not require formal accounting training – it simply requires someone with a good head on their shoulders who has some basic numerical and computer skills (training will be provided!). The time commitment is typically in the range of 5 hours per week, but is very flexible as to when these hours are spent.
As you are also aware, Trinity finds itself in a difficult financial position this year. If we are unable to find a volunteer to take on the bookkeeper role, it will be necessary to pay someone to perform this function. Our rough estimate is this will cost the church around $5000 per year. Again, we can not operate without these functions being performed. We are hopeful that someone from Trinity will be able to kindly volunteer their time for this important role. We are happy to answer any questions you may have about the responsibilities, skills required, and training/shadowing that will be provided. Please contact the office if you are able to assist or need more information. thank you for prayerfully considering this opportunity.
It’s almost time for the Annual Report! please have your reports in to the office by February 1st.
